“People don’t care what you know until they know how much you care.”

That was one of many lessons shared with Northwest Illinois CEO students during our visit to Barkau CDJR with President Rick Barkau and Couy Barkau.

More than 70 years as a family-owned business provided a great backdrop for an inside look at the workings of a car dealership—and an even better conversation about business and life.

Throughout the morning, Rick and Couy reinforced the importance of showing up on time, doing the little things well, creating real value for your customers, and surrounding yourself with great people. They encouraged our students to believe in what they’re pursuing without worrying too much about what others may think, while also being honest about the commitment entrepreneurship requires and the importance of having your family alongside you.

One message tied much of it together: in life, you can be a drain or a fountain. Choose to be the fountain—build people up, share the positive, and let others know when they’ve made a difference.

Thank you to Rick, Couy, and the Barkau team for opening your doors, sharing your experience, and investing in our students. A great morning filled with lessons that reached well beyond the car business.
