🧵 A Dress Surgeon with an Entrepreneurial Spirit: Turning Creativity into Opportunity!
Our Northwest Illinois CEO students enjoyed an inspiring visit with Jacquelyn, whose entrepreneurial journey began as a young girl in the Philippines, altering her own school uniforms and dresses. Her creativity eventually caught the attention of a designer in Australia who discovered her work online!
After moving to America in 2015, Jacquelyn launched an Etsy business creating unique flower girl dresses and jumpers tailored to her customers' personalities. She later recognized an opportunity right here in Northwest Illinois for wedding dress alterations and custom veils.
Calling herself a "dress surgeon," Jacquelyn shared her experiences and valuable entrepreneurial wisdom.
As our students continue their CEO journey, we're beginning to hear some consistent themes from the entrepreneurs we meet: the importance of family and relationships, recognizing opportunities, taking action and understanding the business behind your passion. Jacquelyn reinforced these lessons while sharing some valuable insights of her own:
✂️ Start somewhere! You learn by doing. Waiting for the perfect moment may mean never getting started.
💡 Turn obstacles into opportunities. Creativity isn't just for artists. It's about solving problems, adapting to change and recognizing opportunities in your own community.
⏰ Time and energy are an entrepreneur's currency. Invest both wisely, manage your time and establish a healthy work-life balance.
📊 Know the business behind your passion. Pricing, inventory and paperwork matter. Turning a hobby into a business requires understanding the business side!
🤝 Surround yourself with support and inspiration. Family, relationships and a creative environment can make all the difference.
Our students also rolled up their sleeves for hands-on lessons in sewing, measuring and cutting fabric, gaining a new appreciation for Jacquelyn's craft!
Making this visit even more special, Jacquelyn's son, Kurt, is one of our very own CEO students!
Thank you, Jacquelyn, for sharing your remarkable journey, positive outlook and entrepreneurial wisdom. We're fortunate to have entrepreneurs like you in Northwest Illinois who recognize opportunities in our communities and inspire the next generation!
